HEXIT
Witch Trials in England and Europe with Naomi Ryan
At Kensal Green Cemetery on Sunday the 6th October 2024 - 1:30 pm

In 1529, Henry VIII broke with Rome. His decision to take back control promised to free his subjects from the ‘red tape’ of ecclesiastical witch trials, but did HEXIT make life better for the suspected witches, or should we have remained a member of the Holy See? Was Henry VIII right to get HEXIT done?

Join barrister Naomi Ryan for a deep dive into English and European witch trials. Discover the different but equally bizarre torture methods. Learn about the fantastical powers attributed to witches and decide whether you have the skills necessary to apply for the post of Witchfinder. Most importantly, learn the answer to the most vital question - what animal is the best familiar to take to a witches’ Sabbath. In short, which witch trial is best?

NAOMI RYAN
Naomi Ryan is a criminal barrister and lover of all things macabre. After qualifying with a Masters in Law from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, she taught criminal law to undergraduates at St Hilda’s College Oxford and University College London before embarking on her career as a criminal barrister, where she both prosecuted and defended. She now works as an advisory lawyer on criminal matters within the Civil Service and occasionally writes about the darker side of legal history. She regrets that she has yet to cross-examine a witch or their familiar.
