Exhumation and Repatriation with John Harris
At Kensal Green Cemetery on Thursday the 3rd October 2024 - 7 pm
Exhumation involves the delicate removal of human remains from their resting place, while repatriation is the process of returning these remains to their country of origin or a new location. These services are essential for various reasons, including fulfilling family wishes, meeting legal requirements, and adhering to cultural or religious practices.
A notable case involving exhumation and repatriation is that of Yagan, an Aboriginal warrior from Western Australia. After Yagan was killed in 1833, his head was taken to the UK as a war trophy and buried in a Liverpool cemetery. Following complex negotiations, Yagan's remains were exhumed and repatriated to Australia in 1997. This case underscores the cultural and emotional significance of exhumation and repatriation services.
