RIP VAN WINKLE
A Candlelit Concert in the Cemetery with Gothic Opera
on Saturday the 21st October 2023 at 7 pm

Enter the cemetery at sundown and proceed at your peril to this candlelit concert amidst the headstones of Brompton Cemetery.

Gothic Opera is set to enthrall audiences at Brompton Cemetery with a unique prelude to their full staging of "Rip Van Winkle" at Hoxton Hall. Their performance will feature select highlights from this forgotten English-language operetta by Robert Planquette, which draws inspiration from Washington Irving's iconic tales of Rip Van Winkle and the eerie Sleepy Hollow. Originally premiering in London in 1882, the operetta enjoyed a successful run of nearly 300 performances but has since faded into obscurity, making this upcoming event a rare opportunity to revive a hidden gem of the operatic world.

Based on the short story by Washington Irving, author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, it concerns a man who, after a particularly heavy drinking session, falls asleep for twenty years and awakens to an unfamiliar world.

Gothic Opera guarantee you will not drop off in their presentation of highlights from this long-neglected classic.

Tickets £15 including a delightful gin cocktail and a torchlit parade back to the land of the living. Please click here to purchase.
