Beginning at Aldgate, described by Ian Nairn as “one of the most dramatic contrasts in London”, this fascinating walk traces a landscape shaped by two thousand years of migration, commerce, faith and survival. From the eastern necropolis of Roman London to secluded churchyards and hidden cemeteries created by the communities who sought refuge and a new life beyond the City, discover the remarkable stories buried beneath the streets. Along the way, you’ll uncover burial places representing a rich tapestry of faiths, fortunes and forgotten histories, revealing how generations of Londoners found both sanctuary and their final resting place on the City’s eastern fringe. Tickets £15 including a 20% donation toward a host of restoration projects at Kensal Green Cemetery. Caroline Swan Caroline Swan is a London-based historian and author of the Flickering Lamps blog. She writes about the histories behind often-familiar buildings, parks and - of course - graveyards: a single grave or an unusual street name can often reveal strange, moving, and sometimes even disturbing stories about the past. Caroline is also currently working towards a PhD in London History at Birkbeck, University of London.
