WISH YOU WERE(N'T) HERE Execution Postcards and the Brutality of Spectacle With Jason B Bernard on Sunday the 19th October 2025 at 1:30 pm We send and receive postcards between friends and family, however in today's world of email and social media, the postcard isn't as popular a medium for sending messages as it was in the past. But alongside images of sandy beaches and idyllic landscapes, another kind of image proliferated in the early 20th century. The depiction of execution and torture in postcard form was relatively common in the early 1900s, especially in China and the United States, however they were also produced during WWI and in North Africa and the Middle-East. Some of these postcards allude to a practice grounded in Western imperialism. The images on the postcards offered a persistent replaying of human degradation. Jason B Bernard Jason B. Bernard is a UK-based conceptual artist whose work spans neon, light boxes, books, film, and installation. For over 20 years, he has explored political and humanist themes through language-driven artworks designed to provoke reflection and dialogue. His practice interrogates media, perception, and ideology, encouraging viewers to question the familiar and see from new perspectives. Committed to accessibility and inclusion, Jason’s work explores otherness, human behaviour, and the stories we tell ourselves and each other. |
