Forensics in Film and Medicne
With Peter Dean on Tuesday the 21st October 2025 at 7 pm

Crime novels and murder mysteries have long fascinated readers and viewers, and in this talk, former coroner Dr Peter Dean delves into their rich history. From the deductive brilliance of Sherlock Holmes and the world of Agatha Christie to modern screen detectives like Medical Examiner ‘Quincy’, Dr Dean explores how forensic medicine has shaped both fact and fiction — and shares insights from his own work behind the scenes on shows like Silent Witness, Killing Eve, Midsomer Murders, and Unforgotten.

A past president of both the Coroners’ Society and the Royal Society of Medicine’s Forensic and Legal Medicine Section, Peter brings a unique perspective on the evolving role of coroners and the intersection of forensic science with popular culture.

Peter Dean
Dr Peter Dean began his career in dentistry before qualifying in medicine and working as a GP in East London. He went on to serve for over 25 years as a Forensic Medical Examiner with the Metropolitan Police and later became Senior Coroner for Suffolk, retiring in 2018. Alongside his official duties, he has advised on countless crime dramas and consulted with authors such as Kathy Reichs, Peter James, and Jeffrey Archer (even appearing as a character in one of James’s books).

His practice interrogates media, perception, and ideology, encouraging viewers to question the familiar and see from new perspectives. Committed to accessibility and inclusion, Jason’s work explores otherness, human behaviour, and the stories we tell ourselves and each other.
