Once standing on the rural outskirts of the capital, it became the principal burial ground for the rapidly expanding East End, where merchants, labourers, reformers and families from every walk of life came to be laid to rest. Today, its paths weave through one of London’s largest urban woodlands, where nature has reclaimed Victorian monuments and history lingers among the trees. Alongside magnificent memorials are the stories of early Labour pioneers, notable East Enders and the victims of the Bethnal Green Tube disaster of 1943, the greatest single loss of civilian life in Britain during the Second World War. Join us for a guided tour through this remarkable cemetery as we uncover the people, monuments and forgotten histories that shaped London’s East End.
