| BRICK, BONE & BURIAL A Tour Inside St Mary's Crypt and Churchyard with Adrian Bakelman Saturday 24th October 2026 at 11:00 am Join us for a rare exploration of one of east London’s most atmospheric and little-known historic sites: the crypt and churchyard of St Mary’s Wanstead. Standing at the heart of Wanstead, St Mary’s has been a place of worship since the medieval period. Its churchyard preserves the stories of generations of local families, while beneath the church lies its remarkable brick-vaulted crypt, a space rarely opened to the public. Built in the 1790s, its long passages, family burial vaults and elegant Georgian architecture offer a fascinating glimpse into the hidden world beneath London’s churches. Unlike the medieval charnel houses of earlier centuries, St Mary’s crypt reflects a new era of funerary architecture, when wealthy parishioners purchased private burial chambers beneath the church itself. Today it remains an extraordinary survival: a labyrinth of brickwork, arches and sealed vaults where inscriptions and architectural details evoke the lives—and deaths—of those laid to rest here more than two centuries ago. Tickets £15 include a 20% donation to St Mary's Church Wanstead. Please click here to purchase. |
